Standing in the quiet but once industrious landscape of the Cwm Elan lead mine it's easy to imagine the manual clanking of pick axes and shovels with the rhythmic throb of the water-powered ore crusher in the background. But now, over a century after its closure, with only the shells of buildings and piles of rubble remaining, all is calm as nature slowly reclaims the space.
This recording was made with microphones placed in the entrance to an upper adit. We hear the gentle drip of water seeping through fissures in the rock and the lilting song of a Willow Warbler in a tree close by. Also heard from time to time are Wren, Carrion Crow and the occasional honk of a Raven flying overhead.
