Path alongside the River Severn / Afon Hafren
Whenever I visit the Hafren Forest, I'm drawn to this particular spot: the shallow river flowing over pebbles, the tall spruce backdrop and the more open area of young broadleaf opposite all combine to give a particular acoustic quality to the place. It's so evocative that, listening just now, I can actually smell the delicate scents of the evening air: perhaps that's even a form of synesthesia?
It's just after 9pm and a Song Thrush is cycling through its repertoire of phrases, each repeated typically two to four tmes. The intricate twists and turns of the constant tumble of water over the river's stony bed forms a meditative backdrop. It's easy to fall asleep when listening to this, so I've deliberately faded out slowly at the end!
In addition to the foreground Song Thrush, I also hear another from time to time. It's not easy to identify all of the singers, but two stand out: the complex high-pitched song a Wren and, towards the end, the gentle lilt of a Willow Warbler.
