A section of the Great Cormorant colony at Penderi Cliffs
On a calm, bright afternoon I walked along the coast path over penderi cliffs to a small cove, a common nesting site for Cormorants. The narrow ledges on the almost sheer northern slopes of the cliffs provide a safe and relatively sheltered location, and I counted around 30 rather precariously perched nests of sticks. I set up my microphones amidst the gorse bushes at the top of the opposite slope, then crept back to a hidden position to listen.
In this recording, about 80m below the microphones, waves pound the pebble shoreline and form a dramatic backdrop for the repeated cries of the Cormorant chicks & the guttural calls of the adults. From time to time Herring Gulls can be heard wheeling overhead and, at the very end, the call of a lone Chough.
